About us

Hi and welcome to 'Veggie baby, baby!'

We are two vegetarians (10+ years) in our mid-thirties who, in February 2013, had a baby boy. As soon as the weaning stage began we were faced with the challenge of providing nutritious food for our baby that contains all he needs for growing into a strong and healthy child. Not an easy task it seems...

But back to the beginning

Our baby boy was born in February 2013 in London, United Kingdom. His entry into the world turned our life upside down. Apparently not an uncommon occurrence for first time parents. It was important to me that he would be breastfed for all those many physical and emotional benefits. Despite a rocky start, I breastfed the monkey for 8 1/2 months.

First tastes

5 1/2 months in I started offering our baby a lick of a banana. He was curious but it didn't leave a huge impression (or did it? He still doesn't like banana). Different countries have different meal planners and suggest different first tastes. I started at lunchtime and I gave our baby pureed carrot.

I assume most babies might look like that, but his face was priceless. Something along the lines of "phwaaahhh, what is that????" Followed by: "Let me try that again!". So the journey into solids started.

The monkey turned out to be a great eater (so far, apparently this all changes sooner or later). Whatever we presented him was tasted with a cautious little mouth full, to then be greeted with a wide open mouth. Nice one, this is making our lives quite easy for the time being.

We read a fair few books (or half of them, well at the very least the introduction) which said to get as many tastes and textures onto those fingers and taste buds as possible, in the hope that our baby won't be asking solely for chicken (!) dippers by the time he is two.

Each few days I would introduce a new veg, then some baby rice and other baby musli. Over time I blended them less finely so the monkey would learn to chew. Which he did.

So, we started cooking. But what to cook that will include enough iron? Zinc? Omega oils?

For us it may be ok to be a bit lame when it comes to making sure that we really get each and every one of the right amount of vitamins, but for our veggie baby we feel we need to go that extra mile. Doesn't everyone want to give their baby the best start in life? Nutrition surely is a huge part of a balanced and healthy life, is it not? But a balanced veggie baby diet would require dedication, study and planning ahead.

The blog

We started this blog at our monkey being eight months and initially it was meant to be just a food blog. However, the blog is now our veggie baby journey journal, documenting what we cook, how it goes down, what we are reading, what's happening in our little family's life and other general parenting topics that we found interesting and important to us.

So, here we go baby!
